Graduation day is supposed to be a time of celebration. It is the day when students are supposed to be thrust into the real world and have to earn money by themselves instead on rely on the allowance handed to them by their loving parents. From the looks of it these days, the real world is not only harsh but it is downright nasty.
According to the top companies, they will be cutting down on recruitment by as much as 17%. That is a significant number although such problems with employment have happened before. Almost every decade has a low year and there are some decades that are lower than others. The low points will always exist and college graduates have generally survived in the past. After the dot com bubble burst in the early 2000s, a lot of people lost their jobs and a lot of people spent their college years expecting to get into the internet craze.
According to Chief executive of Graduate Prospects and Hecsu Mike Hill, “Graduates should not panic. There are lots of jobs out there, but they will be harder to get because more people will be going for them. There are more jobs for graduates now than there were 10 years ago. The overall trend is up but there have always been ups and downs, " he said.
During these times, it is said by analysts that the key is to go into the public sector which is more secure than the private companies. The trick is that graduates should not be solely focused on a few jobs that they want but they should try to broaden their horizons. It is advised that they keep their eyes open and that they be prepared to take on jobs that they do not particularly like.
